Duststorm
It was a story that my grandmother told me of when one of the biggest dust storms in her lifetime hit Alice Springs. She was with her sister, Jean, walking back from the butchers when they saw the dust coming over the McDonal Ranger like a waterfall. They tried to make it back to the mission block but the wind and hailstones came. Lucky for them the hailstones were small. Nana Jean had a hanky on her head and used it to cover her mouth and nose. Nana Julia grabbed her shirt and shoved her head up her shirt to stop the dust.

Old Days
We had cultural law. Our people were ruled by our cultural law.
Women knew what their roles were within that community, they were the providers, they were gathers and would collect seed, grain, and wood for the fire.
They would gather everything that the hunters would need to help the clan to survive. The women would build the wiltja (semi-permenant base camp).
The men were the hunters and warriors, and the ones that carried the tribal law. They were responsible for punishment, order and hunting.

Old Ways
These were nomadic ways.
Our clans would travel to find seasonal food and water supplies.
The men were the fire starters and women were the fire carriers.
The women built semi-permanent base camps that needed to be reconstructed each time the clan travelled.
The clan lived sustainably. They would spend time in one area but left before the environment and resources had been depleted.

Culture
Dance and storytelling was one way of teaching the young boys and young girls of their responsibilities.
When they came of age the men would take the young boys away from the women and girls and take through their initiation ceremony.
The boys would come as men. The women would take the girls away and teach them to survive, dig up grubs and identify plants, seeds, and flowers for medicinal purposes and for foods. The girls would return as women.

Children’s Python
When I was young, we spent time as children playing at the Wanmarra Waterhole in Watarraka National Park in my uncle’s country (King’s Canyon, NT).
We were told by our grandparents that we should be careful running through the long grass and bulrush reeds.
The Children’s Python hides in the long grass, it is small and delicate and would be crushed if we stepped on one.
We were taught to be respectful of this animal & told never to harm them.
